I think the author's point is more that "good" and "evil" are human concepts, and that they don't really apply to the plane of existence to which ghosts belong.
It's just that some of them are like hungry predatory animals, while others are like parasites, and yet others are like guardians who have the need to protect things they feel attached to. That kind of thing.

Japan knows the risks of incest. It actually has a government agency dedicated to checking the records to find the closest common ancestor of a couple looking to get married, and it doesn't allow them to do so if they're too closely related. Though the fact that it's necessary at all says a lot about the country.
