The manga summed it up quite nicely. Simo was a simple farmer who picked up a rifle to defend his homeland, and while the skills he used would be considered trite by modern standards, they made him invisible back during his time.

To help him blend in with the environment, he'd wear an all white uniform, and pad the area around him with snow to reduce the smoke from his muzzle. In order to further reduce the chances of being seen, he'd chew on the snow to lower the temperature in his mouth so he could breathe without the chance of the steam giving away his position.

His most impressive feat, in my opinion, was his use of iron sights of his Mosin–Nagant rifle to pick off his targets, as 1) the glass of a telescopic scopes would've given away his position
2) The cold would cause the lenses to fog up and
3) he wasn't trained (nor did he like to use) those lenses either.

Guy racked up anywhere from 200-500 kills on his own, and were it not for an explosive round that tore through his face and left shoulder, likely would've stacked even more kills.
