Ironically my friends would call me religious. XD However I like me a good story and in many fantasy stories gods can often be killed or eliminated or slowly vanish from existence because no one believes in them anymore.

The fact that all these gods latched onto the King means they felt that they had to run or they'd die in some form since all their humanity was dead.

I don't doubt that this Humanity has strong believers somewhere but what if their gods had already been fighting these dark forces in the shadows for some time and through their sacrifice the people could live if only on borrowed time?
