It's been some time since I read one but I think this is a case of the "game" not being a game at all but instead a bridge to this other world. Our MC being the first to complete a round trip completed the originally one sided connection and by continuing to play its slowly "unmasking" the game's appearance as just a game.

How certain I am will depend on the developers reaction to the suddenly extremely advanced ai "npcs"
