Well...this would have worked if it's in the anime only. From what I remember...this so called filler was actually from an extra story released after the conclusion of the arc. Meaning that Asuna died first, Kirito won, and Kirito woke up from the long slumber. Then this story being released to supplement the story.
The anime adaptation tried to make it into a linear story so the extra stories (this, beast tamer, and blackmith girl arc) were shown before the end of SAO.

Just saying that he wanted the item to ressurect the girl she loved at that time. He was being tormented as he's the only one survived the ordeal. After knowing the item's condition, he would be devarstated to the point of being suicidal (all hope was lost), thus don't even want the item. Not to mention him being solo thus can't even use it to ress someone. Thus, he gave it to someone he knew....At that point, I could see that he didn't have the will to live anymore. Fortunately, he got the pre-sent message from her on christmas eve...thus saving him from the torment.....

I am confused after seeing one of the panels here.....anyone else realize which one I'm talking about?

This is just my opinion tho....while that may work in real life, I think it won't work in this scenario. I assumes that in the era MC lives, a single wrongdoing inflicted to a person in power may even wipe a whole family/organization/sect etc....

I dunno. Iirc, at first the monk was trying hard to dethrone the leader using dirty tactic. If the monk really want him dead, he would just continuously put the leader in dangerous situations....
