They said that amount of blood could make 50 zealots, and it was precious, it also would reduce his life to just 1 week. So it obviously useful. You are also talking about someone who just sent 500 to die to a slime, why would he not use it on a subordinate?
Nothing you said excuses the stupid decision, unless next chapter it has some crazy downside because plot reasons.
