The whole arc of MC being in this town is weird. She is getting dragged into this and the story has been turned into group conflicts over MC trying to survive.

It's more like he took advantage of it. He has had others motives from the start.
He was down in the dump then wanted a rebound girl, he paid for the rebound girl and became obsessed.
Even after getting another GF he was still obsessed, so obsessed that he started to spend a lot of money on her, over his GF. Instead of giving his GF the hard no and cutting her off, he decides to just have both.
The guy is just a scumbag that gaslit himself into thinking what he is doing is for her but in reality it was for himself, up to a point. The only change he has made is that he started actually caring for her now. And remember, even on this date he still has a GF somewhere in the background.
Does the ends justify the means.
