There is kind of a limit to their ability to attack him since as we saw with how he suffered at the first chapter from getting killed there is a level drop along with losing items.
If they continue to attack and get killed then they will become weaker and weaker to the point that they won't even be practice anymore.
Even if they run and go kill monsters to level back up and attack again they will still end up being stuck on a circle of dropping levels and gaining them back and not progressing while he gets stronger not only by killing monsters but them as well.
So basically their most important attack that they needed to succeed was the first time they attack him but they failed at it.
