Dragon ball, was originally meant as a comical parody of "journey to the west", his editors and fans enjoyed the story & fights so much, He continued the series despite intending to end it after the pilaf arc, since he usually liked doing a bunch of short-gag-stories and one shots. Same issue after dragon ball, Z was never suppose to happen. after the whole saiyan/frieza arc it was suppose to end, And again with the android/cell-games. The whole buu arc, GT, was its own beast. Very little involvement outside of a few character designs. He wanted the guy who designed the ss4 form, to use the big shoulder/arm form from the prototype/concept in the GT-series, but it never happened.. So he added that to daima instead.
He, was the John McClain of manga. When he though he was finally able to quit, they pull em back in. The funny thing is the resurrections F and battle of god arc's (one of which inspired by a song), were the first time in a log while that he felt motivated to continue the series again. that same time, he trained his successor.
