Probably because surrounding countries that want war are now aware that their kingdom has no protection from the spirits since their hero has separated from the kingdom. Their household is the major power for the kingdom afterall. If their biggest weapon is widely known to no longer exist, then enemies will jump on the opportunity to attack them while they're defenseless. Why wouldn't spirits help opposing forces attack the country whose leaders killed a bunch of their children?

ellen got tired of the scheming. the king wants to use the spirits power to end the curse by doing anything to get their families closer, whether it be through good or bad intentions. the king didn't realize that ellen wasn't a naive little girl and his plan backfired. lol

the way i look at it the naïve prince is probably the royals only hope. honestly, he's kind but very naïve to what's going around him. if he goes through some character development and changes it could be a step in the right direction. if he works with ellen it could maybe help on getting the spirtis and ellens family into forgiving the royal family and finally end the curse. as for shipping ellen and the prince not yet, but if he changes in the future maybe...though the current king would have to be removed for any of this to really happen.
