In the village of Hinamizawa, Keiichi Maebara and his friends live their everyday lives peacefully and without incident. Having just moved to the town, Keiichi finds himself with no shortage of new friends. One of the youngest of this group, Satoko Houjou, plays many pranks on her friends and is always cheerful. But behind her smile lies a dark past, filled with personal heartache.

Despite all of the tragedy in her life, Satoko is still able to find happiness. Keiichi, who admires her resilient spirit, begins to think of himself as a brother figure and her protector. But when her uncle Teppei returns to town, Satoko begins showing signs of abuse. Keiichi longs to return his friend to her former happy self… so much so, that he starts to consider doing something drastic to keep her safe.

When Keiichi Maebara moved to the small village of Hinamizawa, he did not expect to make friends so quickly. Now Keiichi's days are spent having fun and playing games with his new companions, and his life couldn't be better. However, one day he sees one of his friends, the tomboyish Mion Sonozaki, working at a maid café. Deciding to tease her about it, his initial joking quickly turns to shock as the girl reveals that she is actually Mion's twin sister, Shion.

As luck would have it, both girls want to spend the annual Cotton Drifting Festival by Keiichi's side. But when Shion breaks the town's sacred rules and sneaks into a sealed shrine during the festival, dragging Keiichi along with her, things take a turn for the worse. Now, Keiichi and Shion find themselves in fear of being spirited away due to their mistake and must find a way to atone before it is too late.

The story of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is divided into a total of eight chapters: four "Question" arcs and four "Answer" arcs. Each chapter keeps the same main characters, but ends in a different way. However, each chapter gives valuable answers, hints, and clues to the previous one, while at the same time bringing forth even more mysteries.

1. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan - At a Confessional (1997)
As he is visiting Italy, Rohan decides to research the churches, especially for their architecture and spiritual background. He walks into a confession booth to research the interior, but mistakenly walks into the side reserved for the priest. Shortly after, a man walks into the other side of the booth and confesses his sin to Rohan, believing him to be the priest. Rohan hears his confession anyway, interested in getting information out of the man.
This one-shot was also included in Shikei Shikkouchuu Datsugoku Shinkouchuu.

2. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan - Mutsukabezaka (2007)
Rohan meets his editor, Kagamari Minoru, while reading a De Staël's Art book. Rohan explains that due to his research about the Yokai legend he bought 6 mountains in order to stop a corporation who wanted to build a resort in that area. When the resort plan was abandoned, Rohan's lands lose its value and he is unable to recover his money. However, Rohan tells his editor the research was a success and begins telling him about it.

3. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan - Millionaire Village (2012)
Kishibe Rohan accompanies Izumi Kyouka, a Manga magazine editor, to a buy house at a village far off from civilization. They soon discover the village is home to a group of millionaires who had all mysteriously become rich at the age of 25. Rohan and Izumi enter one of the houses, only to realize they they are trapped by a mysterious power that won't let them progress unless they follow specific rules lest they suffer the consequences.

4. Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan - Poaching Reef (2013)
Tonio Trussardi (a minor character featured in Part IV: Diamond Is Unbreakable) seeks Rohan's help in retrieving a rare type of abalone from the sea near Morioh, as a key ingredient in a dish intended to treat Tonio's wheelchair-ridden beloved.

5. Kishibe Rohan goes to Gucci (2011)
A short story published in the October 2011 issue of the fashion magazine Spur, in which the mangaka mixes advertising for Gucci products with a little supernatural flavour courtesy of Kishibe Rohan and his grandmother's old travelling bag.

Living on Angel's Island are a species of merpeople that can live in both the sea and on land. They have the form of a human, but can breath in water as well as on land. Luna is a princess of this species of mermaid living on Angel's Island, but is exiled for breaking some of their rules. As punishment, she is placed inside a sea shell, and set adrift across the sea. Meanwhile Eiji Kusahara, the son of a wealthy Japanese family, meets Soleiu (Luna's older sister) and they try to discover the mysteries behind Angel's Island.

One day, Nana, who has always wanted to get married, has a fateful encounter. Unfortunately, she had to endure violence since the marriage, so she decided to kill her husband and put his corpse in a freezer, but things aren't always like one want as she finds out when he comes back…

In the near future: A world renowned mathematician / physicist Francis Dullam loses his left brain hemisphere and retires from hard science to study dolphins. Several years later he comes up with the new thesis which is essentially a collection of dolphin footage. As the "thesis" is being severely criticized by the media, Ishii Mitsunari (a student living in America) discovers the idea hidden there, that will help to create the true Artificial Intelligence.
Motivated to create the AI first Mitsunari leaves for Okinawa to follow the footsteps of Dullam.

In this story, Nagai gets his folklore on with every chapter containing a lot on Buddhist lore or Japanese folklore. The prologue introduces us to Heaven, Incorporated, a company with a particular staff that hunts down all sorts of supernatural monsters and protects humanity from them.

On a wharf on Tokyo Bay is a small art gallery named Gallery Fake. The owner of the gallery, Fujita Reiji (藤田 玲司), was once a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was a learned curator with remarkable memory, keen aesthetic sense, great skill in restoration of paintings, and knowledge of many languages, so he was called "the Professor." However, because of trouble in the workplace, Fujita was forced to quit the museum.

Now he is an art dealer who sells paintings, authentic and fake alike, at extraordinary prices. His motto is, "One without aesthetic sense can't help being cheated out of his money. And, by being deceived, one may learn to distinguish the real one from the counterfeit."

However, Fujita is not a villain?not someone who sells fake paintings just as a means to earn money. He truly appreciates art and the artists who spent their lives to create it. Sometimes he takes paintings from a wicked politician who considers art only as a means of exchanging bribes. Sometimes he tries to restore destroyed paintings. He often touches the lives of those he encounters, and people are attracted to him in spite of himself.

In 1996 Gallery Fake received the Shogakukan Manga Award.
