Hells, I remember that I started really watching anime online in Youtube. Those fan-subds where fun. Reading the comments in the One Piece episodes was pure joy, it help to figure put where was Pandaman in every episode.
This whole issue of licensing makes me beleive that the culture sorrounding mangas and animes was better when it was a subculture and not mainstream.
I mean, there was fan-subs and fan-translations everywhere and sure there was also translating groups straight up stealing translations and uploading it elsewhere, but mangas where free to be translated by whoever could. Kind of like a golden age of translation piracy if you think about it. But the subculture grew so much it became part of the mainstream and the big corporations started to see the money involve and are now licensing everything.
